Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. After a two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. Developed in collaboration with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and with auditing oversight from Big Four consultancy firm EY, BILS is set to introduce the shekel to the world of blockchain-based financial systems. The stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength among developed market currencies, backed by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. With a gain of over 20% against the dollar in the past year, the shekel is now poised to join other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, in gaining traction within blockchain-based financial systems.
