Rethinking Privacy in the Blockchain Era

The original public blockchain model is being reevaluated as institutions demand greater privacy for their transactions. Tempo, a prominent payment blockchain, has proposed a private enterprise stablecoin transaction system, signaling a significant shift towards private networks. However, the type of privacy that will be implemented is still uncertain. The current public blockchain model poses significant risks for institutions, as all transactions are visible to anyone with a browser. This lack of privacy is an existential problem for financial markets, where sensitive information can be exploited by competitors, criminals, or other malicious actors. Tempo's solution, Zones, offers private parallel blockchains connected to the main network, where participants can transact privately, but the Zone operator still has visibility into all transactions. This model relies on trusting an intermediary, which may not be acceptable for all institutions. An alternative approach is zero-knowledge cryptography, which enables parties to prove the validity of transactions without revealing underlying data. ZK-native blockchains build this functionality into the execution layer, ensuring that no sensitive information is stored on the public ledger and no operator has a god's-eye view. This approach offers verifiable privacy, allowing institutions to prove that transactions were legitimate without revealing sensitive information. The regulatory objection to privacy is becoming obsolete, as ZK cryptography can enforce selective, programmable disclosure, revealing only what regulators need to see. The industry must now choose between privacy through trusted operators or cryptographic guarantees that require no trust at all. Both approaches have implications for risk surface, compliance posture, and exposure to failure modes. The question is no longer whether privacy is necessary, but what type of privacy will be implemented, and who will be trusted with sensitive information.
