Trump Administration's Department of Justice Drops Investigation, Paving the Way for Federal Reserve Nominee
The US Department of Justice, led by President Donald Trump, has dropped its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, which could pave the way for the confirmation of Trump's nominee, Kevin Warsh. Warsh, who has significant personal wealth, including assets in the cryptocurrency space, has been awaiting a Senate vote after a confirmation hearing. Trump has been critical of Powell's management of interest rates and chose Warsh as his replacement. However, Republican Senator Thom Tillis had vowed to block Warsh's confirmation as long as the DOJ investigation into Powell was ongoing. The investigation, which was related to cost overruns in a Federal Reserve building project, was dropped on Friday, with the DOJ asking the Fed's inspector general to look into the matter and issue a report. Following the news, predictions of Warsh's confirmation before May 15 rose significantly. US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro stated that she expects a comprehensive report soon and will not hesitate to restart the investigation if necessary. The development could give Trump greater influence over US monetary policy and leave him with more allies on the Fed board, which makes decisions about financial policy, including regulations for the crypto industry. Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the move, calling it an attempt to clear the path for Warsh's confirmation, while Senator Tillis expressed support for Warsh, saying he would vote yes on his nomination once the DOJ dropped its investigation into Powell.
