KuCoin EU Bolsters Anti-Money Laundering Team to Address Austrian Regulator's Concerns

In a move to address regulatory concerns, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has enlisted the expertise of anti-money laundering and compliance specialists. This development comes after the exchange was directed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in AML and compliance roles. KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its anti-money laundering officer, alongside expanding its broader AML function, as announced in a press release. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance professionals Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as deputy anti-money laundering officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized that the exchange has been strengthening its compliance team through multiple appointments, significantly expanding the team's size. KuCoin has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the U.S. following a Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) order and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the requisite license. Liu could not provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, stating that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
