Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Prize for Achieving Largest Quantum Attack on Cryptographic Technology
The threat of quantum attacks on bitcoin, once considered a distant concern, has become more tangible. Quantum security firm Project Eleven recently awarded a 1 bitcoin prize, valued at approximately $78,000, to independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly available quantum hardware. This breakthrough, which is 512 times larger than the previous public demonstration, has significant implications for the security of major blockchains, including bitcoin and ether. Elliptic curve cryptography, the foundation of crypto wallet security, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, quantum computers, utilizing Shor's algorithm, pose a challenge to this assumption. Although Lelli's achievement does not immediately compromise bitcoin's security, which relies on 256-bit elliptic curve security, it highlights the rapid progress being made in quantum attacks. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's result marks a substantial increase in just seven months. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing, with a recent Google Research paper estimating the cost to be below 500,000 physical qubits. This development has sparked concern among bitcoin developers, particularly for wallets with publicly visible keys, estimated to hold around 6.9 million bitcoin. To address this threat, migration paths, including the proposed BIP-360, aim to introduce quantum-safe address types. The achievement of a 15-bit break, although far from the 256-bit threshold, underscores the growing interest and urgency in addressing quantum security in the bitcoin community.
