The introduction of Mythos, Anthropic's AI model, has sparked a significant shift in the crypto industry's approach to security. Mythos belongs to a new class of AI systems that simulate adversaries, exploring how protocols interact and testing small weaknesses to create real-world exploits. This approach has drawn attention beyond the crypto industry, with banks like JP Morgan exploring AI-driven cyber risk as a systemic issue. Early findings from models like Mythos have identified weaknesses in the behind-the-scenes systems that keep crypto platforms secure, including key protection and communication technologies. Vijender highlights two areas where AI models are particularly valuable: multi-step exploit chains and infrastructure-layer vulnerabilities that traditional audits often miss. The interconnected nature of DeFi protocols, which share liquidity and rely on common oracles, creates pathways for risk to spread. AI can map and exploit these dependencies at scale, resulting in a shift from isolated exploits to systemic failures that cascade across protocols. Industry leaders like Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave Labs, view Mythos as an evolution of existing dynamics in DeFi's adversarial environment. AI reflects the tools used to achieve exploits, and DeFi is already built for machine-speed attacks. To defend against AI-driven threats, companies like Gauntlet and Aave are adopting AI-centric approaches, including continuous auditing, real-time simulation, and systems designed with the assumption that breaches will occur. Aave has integrated AI into its workflows for simulations and code review, complementing human-led auditing. The long-term effect of AI on the crypto industry may be less disruption and more divergence, with secure protocols having a greater ability to test and harden systems.
