DeFi Leaders Unite to Support Aave Users with Massive Rescue Plan After Crypto Hack
The world of decentralized finance is often fragmented, but the recent crisis has revealed a surprising level of cooperation. Aave, a prominent lending protocol, is at the forefront of a broad recovery effort following significant losses due to the Kelp DAO hack. This effort, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has secured approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with much of the capital awaiting governance approval. The hack, which affected rsETH markets and posed a risk to lending positions on Aave, has prompted an unprecedented industry response. Aave Labs and other key players are working together to support users and restore normal market conditions. The recovery plan involves allocating up to 250,000 ETH, with Aave's founder, Stani Kulechov, personally donating 5,000 ETH. Other contributors, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano, are also providing significant support. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder, Joseph Lubin, committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink has played a strategic advisory role in the discussions. The effort has also drawn smaller contributions from the community, including proposals from Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle. Additionally, entities such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun are providing deposits and purchasing AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation also involved. The contributions are structured in various ways, including grants, deposits, and credit lines, reflecting different approaches to balancing support with risk management. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed releasing roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by Arbitrum's Security Council to support the remediation effort. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi.
