Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments

The swift advancement of AI agents is transforming online payment landscapes, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a pivotal role, as per Coinbase's Jesse Pollak. In a recent interview with CoinDesk, Pollak highlighted the exponential growth in capabilities of autonomous AI systems, underscoring the increasing need for native transaction methods. This shift has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' enabling AI systems to autonomously pay for services such as data access, compute, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his enthusiasm for x402, an open-source payments protocol developed by Coinbase and collaborators like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, which facilitates on-demand API payments without traditional subscriptions or billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can execute a single API or smart contract call to transfer funds globally, virtually instantaneously and without significant cost. Early adoption is evident, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having been processed through X402 to date, primarily on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can directly access. Pollak's long-term vision involves creating an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention, allowing software to seamlessly discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the more immediate impact will come from individuals augmenting their capabilities with AI. The broader challenge for crypto remains adoption, with Pollak arguing that the solution lies not in enhanced marketing but in making the technology more invisible.
