US Crypto Regulatory Body to Leverage AI in Application Review Process
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its forward-thinking approach to digital assets, is now exploring the potential of artificial intelligence to compensate for its reduced staff numbers. In an interview with CoinDesk, Chairman Mike Selig revealed that the agency is working on implementing AI solutions to streamline the registration application process and support market surveillance. This move is part of the CFTC's efforts to become a leading regulator in the US crypto sector. Currently, the registration process relies on manual document submissions, but the agency is building automated systems to make this process more efficient. AI tools will be used to review applications, identify potential issues, and provide feedback to staff, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks. The CFTC is also developing in-house tools to review swap data and support market surveillance. Chairman Selig emphasized the importance of embracing technology, citing the agency's use of Microsoft's Copilot and its own in-house tools. In his four months at the helm, Selig has prioritized oversight of emerging technologies, including crypto and prediction markets. One notable initiative is the joint guidance with the Securities and Exchange Commission to establish a taxonomy for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. The CFTC is also taking action against fraudulent activities in crypto markets and prediction markets, with a recent case involving a US Army soldier accused of insider trading. Selig reiterated the agency's commitment to enforcing regulations and protecting market integrity, emphasizing that it will take a strong stance against bad actors.
