According to Christian Catalini, a professor at MIT and founder of the Cryptoeconomics Lab, true agentic payments begin when AI is the counterparty, enabling capabilities such as atomic settlement against delivery, per-second payment streaming, and transactions with counterparties that lack a KYC footprint. This is not a scenario for the near future but a near-term engineering challenge that will be addressed by the engineers, investors, and policymakers attending Consensus. The internet was designed for humans, but agents require a different infrastructure. Google Cloud's presence at Consensus 2026 and its investment in blockchain payment rails signal that agentic commerce is being taken seriously at the highest levels of the tech industry. Rich Widmann, Google Cloud's Global Head of Strategy for Web3, notes that the convergence of agentic AI, blockchain payments, and commerce is still in its early stages but gaining momentum. The main friction points arise from the fact that most products are built for humans, not agents, with sign-ups, logins, and manual onboarding creating barriers that slow down agentic commerce. The development of payment infrastructure designed specifically for AI agents is crucial for their ability to transact at scale. Two protocols, x402 and MPP, are emerging as contenders for this role and will be represented at Consensus 2026. x402, an open payment protocol built on HTTP and backed by Coinbase, aims to enable agents to pay for API access and digital services with stablecoins in a single, frictionless flow. MPP, developed by Tempo and supported by Stripe, offers an alternative vision for autonomous agent payments. The presence of both protocols at the event will facilitate a debate on the standard-setting for agentic commerce. Other key figures attending the event include Stefano Bury, head of Virtuals Protocol, and Chi Zhang, co-founder of Kite, who are working on autonomous AI agent infrastructure and decentralized payments. CoinDesk University will provide a three-day curriculum for attendees to learn about the implementation of agentic payments, from first principles to advanced implementation. The program will cover topics such as setting up a stablecoin wallet, compliance, and using OpenClaw and x402. As agentic commerce is an early-stage present that is moving rapidly, the protocols and regulatory frameworks discussed at Consensus 2026 could have a lasting impact on the industry.
