U.S. Senator Gives Green Light for Next Step in Clarity Act Proceedings

The latest development in the bill aimed at integrating the crypto sector into the U.S. financial system has seen Senator Thom Tillis, a key figure in the legislative negotiations, express his intention to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. This move comes after Tillis had requested more time for bankers to negotiate the approach to stablecoin rewards, a contentious issue that has delayed the market structure bill. According to the senator, the work on the Clarity Act has addressed many of the concerns raised by banking lobbyists regarding the potential threat of stablecoin yield to interest-bearing deposits. Tillis has encouraged the chair to proceed with the markup, which could lead to a mid-May hearing of the Senate Banking Committee. This hearing is crucial for advancing the legislation before a final version can be voted on by the Senate. The senator has also stated his intention to share the compromise text on stablecoin yield with stakeholders ahead of the hearing and has invited bankers to continue negotiations if they have additional points to discuss. The crypto industry has welcomed Tillis' remarks, viewing them as a positive sign for progress. Other challenges, including a Democrat-driven section aimed at banning government officials from personal business interests in crypto and potential hangups related to decentralized finance (DeFi) developers, still need to be addressed. With approximately 11 weeks remaining in the Senate calendar before the lawmakers disperse for midterm election demands, any further delays could jeopardize the bill's chances of passing.
