Gemini Secures Derivatives License, Eyes Expansion into Regulated Markets

Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has been granted a derivatives clearinghouse license by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This approval enables Gemini to clear and settle trades internally, giving the company greater control over its prediction market products. As a result, Gemini's shares experienced a surge of approximately 7%. The prediction market sector has seen significant growth, with trading volumes increasing by over 300% in 2025 to $63.5 billion. Gemini's expansion into this sector is expected to challenge existing players such as Kalshi and Polymarket. The company has also announced plans to introduce a full-stack trading ecosystem, including sports, crypto, futures, options, and event-based contracts. Furthermore, Gemini intends to expand its offerings to include crypto futures, options, and perpetuals for U.S. users. The Winklevoss twins have expressed their vision for Gemini to become a 'super app' for financial services, with a focus on the U.S. market.
