US Crypto Regulatory Body to Utilize AI for Application Reviews
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its openness to digital assets, is turning to artificial intelligence to compensate for a significant reduction in its workforce. In an interview with CoinDesk, Chairman Mike Selig revealed that the agency is leveraging AI and automation to review registration applications and enhance market surveillance, particularly in the crypto sector. This move comes as the CFTC aims to become a leading regulator for the US crypto industry. The current registration process, which relies on manual document submission, is being overhauled to incorporate automated systems, making it more efficient. AI tools will be used to review applications, identify potential issues, and streamline the feedback process for staff. The agency is also developing in-house tools for reviewing swap data and conducting market surveillance, with staff currently being trained on Microsoft's Copilot. Furthermore, the CFTC has issued joint guidance with the Securities and Exchange Commission to establish a 'taxonomy' for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. Chairman Selig emphasized the significance of this development, stating that it will enable market participants, developers, and consumers to engage with crypto systems confidently, without inadvertently violating securities laws. The agency is also taking action against fraudulent activities in crypto markets and prediction markets, with a particular focus on insider trading and market manipulation. The CFTC's stance on its exclusive jurisdiction over prediction markets has led to conflicts with states, which have challenged companies for violating state gaming laws. Overall, the CFTC is embracing technology to enhance its regulatory capabilities and ensure a safer, more transparent crypto market.
