Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Fork

The developers of a newly launched wallet claim to have discovered a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing by leveraging a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network, eliminating the need for any modifications to the network itself. The Postquant Labs' Quip Network wallet, announced on Tuesday, operates on the Arch Network, a system that enables developers to create smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin, rather than relying on a separate chain or wrapped tokens. This approach allows for the incorporation of a post-quantum signature scheme, known as WOTS+, which does not rely on elliptic curve math that can be compromised by a quantum computer. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, built on top of Bitcoin, developers can introduce new features without altering the base layer of the network. According to Postquant Labs CEO Colton Dillion, 'The Bitcoin community has delayed addressing the quantum problem for years, despite it being discussed by Satoshi himself. While protocol upgrades may take 5 to 10 years, our approach provides similar protection immediately.' The launch of Quip's wallet comes amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum risk. Prominent developer Jameson Lopp has proposed a plan to phase out quantum-vulnerable addresses, while Paul Sztorc has suggested a hard fork to create a quantum-resistant chain. However, Quip's approach argues that neither of these solutions is necessary, as it can provide protection without requiring a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote. The setup does not need broad miner and node support to activate, unlike traditional soft forks. While some have raised concerns that Layer 2 protection may be insufficient, as Bitcoin mainnet public keys can still be compromised, Quip's approach narrows the window for a quantum attack to as little as two blocks, roughly 20 minutes. The wallet app is set to launch next week, and a third-party audit is currently underway. The Bitcoin deployment of Quip's quantum-resistant accounts is new, and Arch Network is still relatively early infrastructure, but the company believes its approach can provide a viable solution to the quantum risk facing Bitcoin.
