KuCoin EU Enhances AML Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address regulatory requirements, the European division of cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has bolstered its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development follows an order from Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt business operations in the EU, citing a lack of adequate AML and compliance staff. KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its anti-money laundering officer, while also expanding its broader AML function. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as deputy anti-money laundering officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized that the exchange has been strengthening its compliance team through multiple appointments, significantly expanding its size. The move comes as KuCoin faces regulatory challenges, including being barred from the US by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai. However, Liu could not provide a specific timeline for when the FMA would permit KuCoin EU to resume operations in Europe, stating that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.
