Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Mitigate Bitcoin's Quantum Computing Risks Without Forking

The developers of a new wallet claim to have devised a method to address the risks associated with quantum computing by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with Bitcoin, eliminating the need for any modifications to the network itself. Postquant Labs unveiled its post-quantum bitcoin wallet, Quip Network, which operates on Arch Network, a system enabling developers to build smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. Quip incorporates a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, which is a tested cryptographic technique that does not rely on elliptic curve math that could be compromised by a quantum computer. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without altering Bitcoin's core layer. The launch of Quip occurs amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to mitigate quantum risks, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork, while Quip's approach provides similar protection without the need for such upgrades. The Bitcoin community has been hesitant to address the quantum problem, despite it being discussed by Satoshi Nakamoto himself. Quip's approach offers an immediate solution, whereas protocol upgrades could take years to implement. The setup requires no soft fork, consensus change, or community vote, making it a more straightforward solution. However, some argue that Layer 2 protection, like Quip's, may be insufficient as Bitcoin mainnet public keys can still be exposed, providing a potential target for future quantum attacks. The wallet app is set to launch soon, and a third-party audit is currently underway. Quip's quantum-resistant accounts are already available on Ethereum and Solana, but the Bitcoin deployment is new, and Arch Network is still in its early stages. Postquant Labs CTO Dr. Richard Carback noted that their approach reduces the window for a quantum attack to as little as two blocks, approximately 20 minutes. The debate surrounding the best approach to mitigate quantum risks continues, with some arguing that incremental patches are insufficient and a clean fork with built-in quantum resistance is necessary, while others believe that better infrastructure can handle the risks without requiring changes to Bitcoin itself.
