Bitcoin's Quantum Conundrum: A Threat to 6.9 Million Coins, Including Satoshi's
While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum attacks, the ownership of coins is at risk due to the type of math used to secure wallets. A quantum computer can potentially break this math, allowing attackers to drain coins from vulnerable wallets. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, including those held by Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed due to their public keys being visible on the blockchain. The Taproot upgrade has also expanded the problem by publishing keys for spent bitcoins. Although there are proposals to address the issue, such as BIP-360 and a detection system, none have gained broad support from bitcoin's core developers. The lack of a formal governance process and central authority makes it challenging for bitcoin to coordinate a response to the quantum threat, unlike Ethereum, which has a dedicated program and teams working on the migration to quantum-resistant cryptography. The clock is ticking for bitcoin to find a solution before the threat becomes a reality.
