Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments
According to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase, the rapid advancement of AI agents is transforming the online payment landscape, with crypto infrastructure playing a pivotal role. In an interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was previously impossible has become feasible due to the accelerating capabilities of autonomous AI systems, which now require native transaction methods. This shift has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' enabling AI systems to autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a key component of this stack. The protocol facilitates on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can make a single API or smart contract call to transfer funds globally, almost instantly and at minimal cost. Notably, approximately $48 million in payment volume has been processed through x402, with around 95% of transactions occurring on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can access directly. Pollak's long-term vision is to create an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the more significant near-term shift will come from individuals augmenting themselves with AI. He described workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems, enabling top performers to enhance their performance. For the crypto industry, the primary challenge remains adoption, which Pollak argues can be addressed not through better marketing, but by making the technology more invisible.
