Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities
Ondo Finance is taking a significant step towards aligning its tokenized equities with traditional ones by introducing a proxy voting feature, enabling investors to participate in corporate decision-making. In partnership with Broadridge Financial Solutions, this feature allows holders of over 250 tokenized securities on the Ondo platform to review company documents and cast their votes via Broadridge's ProxyVote system. Investors can access these documents and governance tools, typically reserved for traditional brokerage accounts, by logging in with their crypto wallets. The introduction of proxy voting is crucial as tokenized equities have become one of the fastest-growing sectors in the crypto space, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, having tripled in size over the past year, according to RWA.xyz data. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo has over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-U.S. investors. The addition of proxy voting addresses a significant gap in equity tokens, which often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens do not grant direct shareholder rights, this new system enables investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the underlying shares. "This development aligns with Ondo's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible," stated Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, in an interview with CoinDesk. "By being on-chain, investors benefit from the free transferability and DeFi compatibility of these assets, while also gaining the governance rights associated with the underlying assets." Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support blockchain systems. The goal is to create a unified workflow that accommodates both digital and conventional assets. According to Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance will "go a long way in making the tokenized world more scalable and trustworthy for end investors."
