Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: the Shekel Stablecoin

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. This development comes after a two-year evaluation and pilot process, during which Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold collaborated with the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, under the auditing oversight of Big Four consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced significant growth over the past 18 months, with its value exceeding $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated notable strength among developed market currencies, buoyed by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. With a gain of over 20% against the dollar in the past year, the shekel has emerged as the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems.
