Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: the Shekel Stablecoin

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has granted approval for the issuance of a stablecoin pegged to the shekel, marking a significant milestone for the country's financial sector. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has received authorization to launch the token. The BILS token is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and Fireblocks, with EY providing audit oversight. The stablecoin market has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion in value, driven by the establishment of regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated resilience and strength, supported by a thriving technology sector and effective macroeconomic management, making it an attractive currency for on-chain transactions. With the shekel gaining over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, it has become one of the best-performing currencies among developed markets. By introducing the shekel to blockchain-based financial systems, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in these systems.
