US Senators Query Commerce Secretary Over Alleged Tether Loan to Family Members

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has faced questioning from Senate Democrats regarding reports that a trust associated with his children received financing from Tether, allegedly to facilitate Lutnick's divestment of his stake in Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's US finances. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino, seeking clarification on the matter. The lawmakers expressed concerns that such a loan could raise questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and potential conflicts of interest. The inquiry follows recent legislation governing stablecoin issuers, including Tether, and Lutnick's involvement in the President's Working Group on Digital Assets. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions in the best interest of the American public, rather than his family or Tether. Representatives for the Department of Commerce and Tether have not responded to requests for comment.
