Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Predicts AI Agents Will Revolutionize Crypto Payments

The emergence of AI agents is transforming the online payment landscape, with crypto infrastructure playing a pivotal role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In an interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was previously unfeasible has become possible due to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems. As these agents evolve, the need for native transaction methods has become apparent. This shift has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak believes that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a crucial component of this ecosystem. The protocol enables on-demand API payments without subscriptions or traditional billing systems, allowing agents to make instant global payments at virtually no cost. With approximately $48 million in payment volume already flowing through X402, mostly on the Ethereum layer-2 network Base, the ecosystem is expanding rapidly. Pollak envisions a future where agents can seamlessly access and utilize digital services in real-time, without human intervention. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are emerging, Pollak predicts that the near-term impact will come from individuals augmenting themselves with AI. The key challenge for crypto remains adoption, which Pollak believes can be addressed through invisibility rather than improved marketing.
