Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a historic move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the digital token. The BILS stablecoin was created in collaboration with the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. This development marks a significant milestone in the rapidly growing stablecoin sector, which has expanded to over $300 billion in the past 18 months. The dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about potential losses of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. However, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength, with a gain of over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among nations with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
