Rethinking Privacy in the Blockchain Era

The blockchain landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with a growing emphasis on private networks. This shift is driven by the need for institutions to maintain confidentiality in their transactions, a requirement that public blockchains cannot fulfill. The recent architectural proposal by Tempo, a Stripe-backed payment blockchain, has brought this issue to the forefront. Tempo's approach, known as Zones, involves private parallel blockchains connected to the main network, where participants can transact privately, with only cryptographic proofs of validity visible to the public. However, this model relies on trusting an intermediary, the Zone operator, to manage transactions within its zone. An alternative approach, utilizing zero-knowledge cryptography, offers a different path, where transactions are validated without revealing underlying data, and no single operator has visibility into all transactions. This debate highlights the critical choice the industry must make regarding the type of privacy to adopt: one that relies on trusted operators or one that utilizes cryptographic guarantees, requiring no trust at all.
