Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as a researcher has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement has earned Giancarlo Lelli a 1 bitcoin bounty, worth approximately $78,000, from quantum security startup Project Eleven. The breakthrough is considered the largest public demonstration of its kind, posing a potential threat to the security of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which enables crypto wallets to prove fund ownership without revealing private keys, is vulnerable to quantum computer attacks using Shor's algorithm. Although Lelli's result does not immediately compromise Bitcoin's 256-bit elliptic curve security, it underscores the rapid progress being made in quantum computing and the need for the cryptocurrency community to develop countermeasures. The previous public demonstration, a 6-bit break, was achieved by Steve Tippeconnic in September 2025. Lelli's 15-bit result represents a 512-fold increase in just seven months, highlighting the accelerating pace of advancements in quantum computing. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly, with some predictions putting the cost below 500,000 physical qubits. This has significant implications for wallets with publicly visible keys, with approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, or one-third of the total supply, potentially at risk. In response, developers are exploring migration paths, including the proposed BIP-360, which would introduce quantum-safe address types. As the quantum threat landscape continues to evolve, the cryptocurrency community must remain vigilant and proactive in developing strategies to mitigate potential risks.
