Senator Warren Challenges Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Tether's Alleged Loan to His Family
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. financial operations, is facing questions from Senate Democrats about reports that his family received a loan from Tether to facilitate the transfer of his company stake to his children. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino seeking clarification on the matter. The lawmakers are concerned that such a loan, if true, could raise questions about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and the potential influence of the company on his policy decisions. This inquiry comes after Congress passed a law last year to regulate stablecoin issuers like Tether, with Lutnick and Ardoino attending the White House signing ceremony. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions in the best interest of the American public, rather than his family or Tether. The Department of Commerce and Tether have not responded to requests for comment on the matter. Lutnick's company, Cantor Fitzgerald, is now led by his sons Brandon and Kyle. Tether, headquartered in El Salvador, has been expanding its U.S. presence with the launch of its USAT stablecoin and a U.S. arm led by Bo Hines, a former crypto adviser to President Trump. Cantor Fitzgerald is also a significant donor to the Fellowship PAC, a political action committee that has spent millions supporting Republican candidates in various elections.
