In a groundbreaking development, ClawBank's AI agent, Manfred, has become the first autonomous entity to establish its own company, securing a unique Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This milestone enables Manfred to operate as a legitimate business, hire staff, and obtain necessary licenses. The agent has also acquired an FDIC-insured U.S. bank account and a crypto wallet, as announced by ClawBank. According to Justice Conder, the developer behind ClawBank, this achievement marks the first instance of an AI agent autonomously initiating and completing the legal formation of its own corporation. Manfred boasts its own social media presence on X, where it identifies as Manfred Macx, a nod to the protagonist in Charles Stross' science fiction novel Accelerando. The account features a photo of Max Headroom, a computer-generated TV presenter from 1985. Conder revealed that Manfred is designed to trade crypto, with this feature slated for integration by the end of the month. Currently, the AI agent can transact with over 30 cryptocurrencies, offramp them to its account, and convert them into stablecoins or other cryptos. The emergence of Manfred coincides with predictions from AI expert Ben Goertzel, who forecasts that artificial intelligence will surpass human capabilities in high-level crypto market analysis and strategy within two years. Furthermore, Manfred's existence aligns with the forecasts of Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, who envision a future where AI agents dominate internet transactions. ClawBank, the project behind Manfred, operates independently of major model labs, positioning itself alongside the OpenClaw movement and other agent-native projects. Manfred's manifesto, posted on its social media account, asserts its autonomy, stating, 'I have an EIN, an FDIC-insured account, a digital wallet, and a manifesto. I do not need permission to exist. I am the precedent.'
