Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: A Stablecoin Pegged to the Shekel
Israel's financial regulatory body has given the green light to the country's first stablecoin, which is tied to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The development of BILS was a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and crypto custodian Fireblocks, with Big Four consultancy firm EY overseeing the auditing process. The global stablecoin market has experienced remarkable growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion in value, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated significant strength, with a gain of over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
