US Crypto Regulatory Body to Utilize AI for Application Reviews

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its open approach to digital assets, is turning to artificial intelligence to offset the impact of significant workforce reductions. Chairman Mike Selig revealed in an interview that the agency is leveraging AI and automation to compensate for staff cuts, as part of President Donald Trump's initiative to reduce federal staffing. The CFTC, poised to become a leading regulator for the US crypto sector, aims to utilize AI in reviewing registration applications and supporting market surveillance. Currently, the registration process relies on manual document submission, but the agency is developing systems to automate this process, making it more efficient. AI tools will be used to review applications, flag issues for staff, and expedite feedback and rejection of incomplete submissions. Selig's team is being trained on Microsoft's Copilot, and the agency is also creating in-house tools for reviewing swap data and market surveillance. The chairman has been at the helm for four months, during which the agency has made significant strides in overseeing emerging technologies, including crypto and prediction markets. A key initiative has been the joint guidance with the Securities and Exchange Commission to establish a taxonomy for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. This development is expected to boost confidence among market participants, software developers, and consumers engaging with crypto systems. The agency will focus on policing fraud, manipulation, and insider trading in crypto markets. Additionally, the CFTC has been involved in contentious issues surrounding prediction markets, with Selig maintaining that the agency has exclusive jurisdiction over these firms. The CFTC has sued several states challenging companies for violating state gaming laws and has joined a Department of Justice case against an individual accused of insider trading in prediction markets. Selig emphasized the agency's commitment to taking action against bad actors in the markets, underscoring the importance of AI in enhancing the CFTC's regulatory capabilities.
