Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty for Achieving Largest Quantum Attack on Cryptographic Technology

The threat of quantum attacks on bitcoin's underlying technology has become more tangible. Quantum security startup Project Eleven awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty, valued at approximately $78,000, to independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement marks the largest public demonstration of a potential attack on the cryptographic foundation of bitcoin and other major blockchains. Elliptic curve cryptography enables a crypto wallet to prove its control over funds without revealing its private key, but quantum computers running Shor's algorithm can potentially derive the private key from its public counterpart. Although Lelli's result is significant, it does not pose an immediate threat to bitcoin, which uses 256-bit elliptic curve security. The achievement demonstrates the rapid progress in quantum attacks, with the previous public break being a 6-bit demonstration just seven months ago. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing, making it essential for bitcoin developers to implement quantum-safe address types and migration plans to mitigate potential threats.
