Time is Running Out for Bitcoin to Counter Quantum Computing Threats
Not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computers. The process of bitcoin mining, which involves adding new blocks to the blockchain, utilizes a type of mathematics known as hashing that quantum computers are unable to breach effectively. As a result, the blockchain itself and the rule that new bitcoins can only be created through mining would survive a quantum attack. However, ownership of bitcoins would be severely compromised. Bitcoin wallets rely on a different kind of mathematics that converts a private key into a public address. This math is straightforward in one direction but extremely difficult in the other, which is the primary obstacle preventing unauthorized individuals from spending someone else's coins. A recent paper by Google demonstrated that a quantum algorithm known as Shor's can significantly reduce the time required to crack this math problem, potentially allowing hackers to steal bitcoins from exposed wallets. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoins, equivalent to one-third of all mined bitcoins, are stored in wallets with publicly visible keys, making them susceptible to quantum attacks. This includes bitcoins held by the network's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The 2021 Taproot upgrade inadvertently exacerbated the issue by revealing public keys for any bitcoin spent since its activation. While Ethereum, a competing blockchain, has a formal plan in place to transition to quantum-resistant cryptography, bitcoin developers have yet to propose a concrete solution. Several proposals, including BIP-360 and a detection system suggested by BitMEX Research, have been put forth but lack broad support from core developers. The lack of a centralized authority and a governance process in bitcoin makes it challenging to implement significant changes, including those necessary to counter quantum threats. As a result, the network faces a difficult decision: either migrate to quantum-safe addresses, potentially revealing ownership and changing the character of the network, or risk losing exposed coins to quantum attacks. The timeline for responding to this threat is rapidly shrinking, and the window for action may close before the industry is prepared.
