Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. This development comes after a thorough two-year evaluation and pilot process, with Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold receiving authorization to issue the token. The stablecoin, known as BILS, is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and leading crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, with its value surpassing $300 billion, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has proven to be one of the stronger performing fiat currencies among developed markets, backed by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has gained over 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
