Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Network Fork

The developers of a newly launched wallet claim to have developed a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing using a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network, without necessitating any modifications to the network itself. Postquant Labs introduced the Quip Network's post-quantum Bitcoin wallet, which utilizes Arch Network, a system that enables developers to create smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach allows for the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, providing an additional layer of security without altering Bitcoin's core protocol. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without modifying the base layer of Bitcoin. The launch of this wallet comes amidst ongoing discussions within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum risk, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork, and others advocating for a more incremental approach. The Quip wallet's method does not require a soft fork, consensus change, or community vote, offering a potentially more straightforward solution. However, some experts argue that this approach may not be sufficient, as Bitcoin's mainnet public keys could still be vulnerable to quantum attacks.
