Gemini Receives Derivatives License, Expanding into Regulated Markets and Challenging Kalshi and Polymarket

Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has obtained approval from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for a derivatives clearing organization (DCO) license. This license allows Gemini to clear and settle trades internally, giving the company greater control over its prediction market products and enabling it to expand into regulated derivatives and crypto's fastest-growing sector, prediction markets. Following the announcement, Gemini's shares surged by approximately 7%. The approval enables Gemini to operate a full-stack trading ecosystem, offering sports, crypto, futures, options, and event-based contracts. The company also plans to expand into crypto futures, options, and perpetuals for U.S. users. This development is part of Gemini's broader strategy to create a 'super app' for financial services, with the founders believing that prediction markets will become as significant as or even surpass today's capital markets.
