KuCoin EU Enhances Anti-Money Laundering Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address regulatory concerns, the European division of cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has expanded its anti-money laundering and compliance expertise. This development comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority instructed the exchange to halt its European operations due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. KuCoin EU, which holds a MiCA license from the Austrian FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer and has also expanded its broader AML function. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu stated that the exchange has been actively strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments. KuCoin has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the US following a CFTC order and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the necessary license. Liu did not provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume European operations, emphasizing that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
