Senator Warren Challenges Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Tether's Alleged Family Loan
Senate Democrats have raised questions regarding a loan allegedly made by Tether to a trust associated with the children of U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who previously served as the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, the company handling Tether's U.S. financial operations. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have written to Lutnick and Tether CEO Paulo Ardoino, inquiring about the reported loan, which supposedly assisted Lutnick in transferring his stake in Cantor Fitzgerald to his children as part of his compliance with government ethics requirements upon taking office. The lawmakers have expressed concerns that if the reports are accurate, this could imply a close relationship between Secretary Lutnick and Tether, potentially influencing his policy decisions. The senators emphasized the importance of Lutnick making decisions that prioritize the interests of the American public over those of his family or Tether. The inquiry follows the introduction of a new law governing stablecoin issuers, including Tether, which was supported by Congress and the administration of President Donald Trump. Representatives from the Department of Commerce and Tether have not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
