US Authorities Arrest Green Beret Over Alleged Insider Trading on Venezuela Raid
The US Department of Justice has taken action against a high-ranking Army officer, Master Sergeant Gannon Ken Van Dyke, who allegedly used classified information to inform his betting activities on a raid in Venezuela. The operation aimed to capture former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Van Dyke, an active-duty soldier with the US Army Special Forces, also known as the 'green berets,' reportedly created a Polymarket account and placed multiple bets on the outcome of the raid, ultimately winning around $400,000. The DOJ has charged Van Dyke with unlawfully using confidential government information for personal gain, theft of non-public government information, and fraud. According to the indictment, Van Dyke's actions constituted 'clear insider trading' and posed a risk to US national security. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is also pursuing an insider trading complaint in federal court. Following the raid, Van Dyke allegedly attempted to conceal his identity and transferred his winnings to a foreign cryptocurrency 'vault' and then to a brokerage account. The case has drawn attention from news organizations and prompted a response from US President Donald Trump, who expressed his disapproval of the practice of using confidential information for betting purposes.
