Major Players in the Crypto Industry Unite to Support Aave Users After Massive Hack
The world of decentralized finance is often marked by division, but in the face of crisis, it is revealing an unexpected level of cooperation. Following a significant hack that resulted in substantial losses for Aave, one of DeFi's largest lending protocols, a far-reaching recovery effort is in progress. This endeavor, known as 'DeFi United,' has garnered around $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with a considerable portion of the capital still awaiting governance approval. The hack, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and posed a risk to lending positions on Aave, has prompted what appears to be one of the most unified industry responses to a DeFi incident to date. Aave itself is at the heart of the effort, with a governance proposal outlining a plan for the DAO to allocate up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery. Founder Stani Kulechov has also indicated his intention to personally donate 5,000 ETH. Other key contributors within Aave's network are also stepping in, including Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, BGD Labs, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano. However, the response has quickly expanded beyond Aave, with some initiatives beginning with direct outreach from Kulechov to ecosystem participants such as Consensys. Consensys, alongside its founder Joseph Lubin, has agreed to commit up to 30,000 ETH in financial support to aid the recovery and protect users. The effort has drawn contributions from across the community, including proposals from Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle to provide support and limit bad debt across DeFi. Compound has also proposed giving up to 3,000 ETH to the fund. Additionally, entities like Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun are making deposits into Aave or purchasing AAVE tokens. The list of participants continues to grow, with entities such as Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation also contributing. These contributions are a testament to the long-standing relationships Aave has across the ecosystem. The approach to support varies, with some participants offering grants, others deposits, and several extending credit lines, highlighting different strategies for balancing support with risk management. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed that Arbitrum governance approve the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by the network's Security Council into the coordinated remediation effort, aiming to 'make affected rsETH holders whole' and restore rsETH's backing. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, with several proposals still under discussion. Nonetheless, the breadth of participation underscores the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi. As Joseph Lubin noted, 'The Ethereum ecosystem has always been at its best when it moves together.' DeFi United embodies this spirit, representing a broad, coordinated response to protect users and strengthen the infrastructure that has been built.
