KuCoin EU Enhances Anti-Money Laundering Capabilities to Comply with Austrian Regulations

In a move to address regulatory requirements, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has bolstered its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the exchange was instructed by the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in these critical areas. To rectify this, KuCoin EU has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer, while also expanding its broader AML functions. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized the exchange's commitment to strengthening its compliance team, highlighting several key appointments made since then. KuCoin has faced significant challenges recently, including being barred from the U.S. market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the necessary license. While the timeline for resuming European operations remains uncertain, Liu indicated that discussions with the FMA are ongoing, underscoring the need for collaborative dialogue to resolve the current situation.
