Senator Warren Challenges Commerce Secretary Lutnick Over Alleged Tether Loan to Family Members
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, formerly the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, which handles Tether's U.S. financial operations, is facing scrutiny from Senate Democrats over reports that his family received a loan from Tether. The loan allegedly helped finance Lutnick's transfer of his company stake to his children, as required by government ethics regulations upon taking office. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden have asked Tether, a leading global stablecoin issuer, whether it provided financial assistance for this transfer, which could raise concerns about Lutnick's relationship with Tether and potential influence on his policy decisions. The lawmakers expressed concerns that such a loan, if true, would compromise Lutnick's ability to make decisions in the best interest of the public, rather than his family or Tether. The inquiry follows a new law governing stablecoin issuers, including Tether, and Lutnick's involvement in the President's Working Group on Digital Assets. Tether and the Department of Commerce have not immediately responded to requests for comment.
