Time's Running Out for Crypto Clarity

The crypto market structure bill has seen minimal public progress over the past month, making it challenging to predict its outcome. However, it's clear that time is of the essence for its passage. The legislative timeline is rapidly approaching a critical juncture, which will likely increase the pressure on lawmakers. The crypto market structure bill aims to establish a permanent regulatory framework, making it more difficult for future administrations to reverse these rules. Without this legislation, the industry may face similar challenges in the years to come. A crucial deadline is looming, with Memorial Day (May 25) marking a 'drop-dead' date for legislative progress. As summer approaches, lawmakers will focus on their campaigns, leaving little time for non-essential legislation. Before Congress recesses, they will need to address funding for the Department of Homeland Security and the potential nomination of Kevin Warsh as the next Fed chair. CoinDesk's Jesse Hamilton outlined the necessary steps for the Clarity Act to reach President Donald Trump's desk last week. The crypto industry is eager for this bill to pass, with over 100 companies signing an open letter urging a markup hearing in the Senate Banking Committee. However, it remains unclear when the committee will move forward, as outstanding issues, including stablecoin yield, remain unresolved. Once these issues are addressed, the House will need to revote on the bill. According to Congressman French Hill, who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, many of the outstanding issues have already been resolved by the House in its version of the bill, which should facilitate common ground in the Senate. We will be discussing these developments further at Consensus Miami next month.
