Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel, following a comprehensive two-year evaluation process. Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token, which was developed in collaboration with the Solana network and leading crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing provided by EY. This development comes at a time when the stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth, exceeding $300 billion in value over the past 18 months, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. The dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial sovereignty in non-US markets. However, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated resilience, with a 20% gain against the dollar over the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to blockchain-based financial systems, Israel is positioning its currency alongside other leading currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in digital transactions.
