Trump Champions Crypto Legislation at Exclusive Event with Mike Tyson and Tether CEO
On Saturday, a select group of top investors in the $TRUMP memecoin attended an exclusive event at President Trump's Florida club, where he cautioned bankers against hindering crypto legislation. During the private gathering at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump reiterated the stance of his White House crypto advisors on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, pushing back against bank lobbyists who had stalled the legislation. Trump asserted that the White House would not allow banks to undermine the crypto market structure legislation, speaking at the finance-focused conference dubbed 'the most exclusive conference in the world.' In recent months, banking groups had persuaded some senators to share their concerns about US regulations potentially paving the way for stablecoin rewards programs, which they argued could threaten traditional deposit accounts. This objection had derailed Senate progress on establishing a new US regulatory regime for crypto, although recent discussions suggest the bill could still be revived and has a potential path to succeed amidst a tightening lawmaking calendar this year. Trump has indicated that this is a priority. The event featured a range of crypto executives and investors, including Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, Ark Invest's Cathie Wood, and Anchorage Digital CEO Nathan McCauley, as well as boxer Mike Tyson. Beyond crypto, Trump discussed foreign policy issues such as Iran, Venezuela, and NATO, which he described as a 'paper tiger' that is 'never there for us.' Regarding the digital asset industry, Trump adhered to his usual script: 'We are the leader in crypto. It's become mainstream,' he stated. The conference comes as Trump continues to support crypto ventures tied to his name, drawing both industry support and political scrutiny. His close personal connections to digital assets businesses have been a sticking point in passing the Clarity Act, as Democratic negotiators have insisted that senior government officials, including the president, should be banned from profiting from the industry. A previous event he attended for his memecoin investors last year sparked protests and Democratic criticism that his policy aims benefit his own business interests, exemplifying government corruption that needs to cease. He was also criticized for meeting privately with unnamed foreign business figures who had effectively paid for their attendance.
