Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
The Israeli Capital Market Authority has granted approval for the launch of a stablecoin pegged to the shekel, marking a significant milestone in the country's digital currency landscape. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. This development comes as the global stablecoin market, which has grown exponentially over the past 18 months to exceed $300 billion, continues to expand. The dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has sparked concerns about potential losses of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable resilience, bolstered by a thriving tech sector and prudent macroeconomic management, with a gain of over 20% against the dollar in the past year. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems.
