US Crypto Regulatory Body to Leverage AI for Application Reviews

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its embrace of digital assets, is now turning to artificial intelligence to compensate for a significant reduction in its workforce. Chairman Mike Selig revealed in an interview that the agency is exploring the use of AI and automation to streamline processes, including the review of registration applications and market surveillance, following staff cuts under the Trump administration's initiative to reduce federal staffing. Selig, who is scheduled to appear at Consensus 2026, highlighted the potential of AI tools to review applications, identify issues, and provide feedback more efficiently. The current manual submission process is being overhauled to incorporate automation, making the process faster and more efficient. The agency is also utilizing Microsoft's Copilot and developing in-house tools for reviewing swap data and market surveillance. Under Selig's leadership, the CFTC has been proactive in overseeing emerging technologies, including crypto and prediction markets. A key initiative has been the joint guidance with the Securities and Exchange Commission to establish a taxonomy for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. This development is expected to boost confidence among market participants, software developers, and consumers engaging with crypto systems. Furthermore, the CFTC is taking a firm stance on policing fraud, manipulation, and insider trading in crypto markets. The agency's foray into prediction markets has been contentious, with Selig asserting the CFTC's exclusive jurisdiction over these firms, leading to conflicts with states that have challenged companies for violating state gaming laws. The CFTC has also been involved in a Department of Justice case against a US Army Special Forces soldier accused of insider trading in prediction markets. Selig emphasized the agency's commitment to taking action against bad actors in the markets, signaling a serious enforcement stance.
