KuCoin EU Bolsters Anti-Money Laundering Team to Address Regulatory Concerns
In an effort to address regulatory concerns, the European division of cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has recruited experts in anti-money laundering and compliance. This move comes after the exchange was instructed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in these critical areas. KuCoin EU, which holds a license under the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) framework, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer, while also enhancing its broader AML capabilities. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned Austrian compliance professionals Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu noted that the exchange has been working to fortify its compliance team, making several key appointments to ensure a robust structure. KuCoin has faced significant challenges recently, including being barred from operating in the U.S. by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without a proper license. Liu indicated that discussions with the FMA are ongoing regarding the resumption of KuCoin EU's European operations, but a specific timeline has not been provided.
