KuCoin EU Bolsters Anti-Money Laundering Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In an effort to satisfy regulatory requirements, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has enhanced its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This move comes after the exchange was instructed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a lack of sufficient staffing in AML and compliance roles. KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its new Anti-Money Laundering Officer, while also expanding its broader AML function, as announced in a recent press release. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu stated, 'We have always had a very transparent and open dialogue with them, and they have been very honest, transparent, and supportive of us.' Since February, KuCoin EU has been focused on strengthening its compliance team, resulting in several new appointments and a significant expansion of the team. KuCoin has faced recent challenges, including being barred from the U.S. by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the necessary license. Liu was unable to provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, noting that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
