DeFi's 48-Hour Reckoning: How the Market Repriced Risk
Until April 17, lending stablecoins on Aave yielded 2.32% APY, despite the Federal Reserve's overnight rate being 3.64%. This discrepancy suggested that the market viewed unregulated DeFi as a lower credit risk than US Treasury bonds. However, this mispricing was corrected within 48 hours. The catalyst was an exploit on Kelp DAO's cross-chain bridge, which allowed an attacker to mint unbacked tokens and borrow $190-230 million in real assets. The incident led to a contagion effect, with $6-10 billion in net outflows from Aave and a significant increase in stablecoin deposit APYs. The event highlights the unique risks associated with DeFi, including the lack of bankruptcy laws and recourse for users. As a result, institutional allocators should reassess their exposure to DeFi and recognize that the market has adjusted to reflect the true risks involved.
