Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: A Shekel-Based Stablecoin

The Israeli Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, which is pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. BILS, as the token is known, was created in collaboration with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and auditing firm EY. The stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion in value. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated significant strength, gaining over 20% against the dollar in the past year, making it an attractive option for a stablecoin. By bringing the shekel into the blockchain ecosystem, it joins other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in financial systems based on blockchain technology.
